World Book Day

Let’s be honest — some of us didn’t fall in love with books because we were told to read.
We fell in love because a book saw us before the world ever really did.

On this World Book Day, I want to give flowers to every dog-eared paperback, banned title, thrift store treasure, and overdue library loan that helped shape who we are. Books are more than stories — they’re sanctuaries, second chances, and soft landings. They are mentors, mirrors, escape hatches, and portals to places we might never visit but still feel like home.

When we talk about reading, we’re not just talking about “skills.”
We’re talking about survival.
We’re talking about imagination as resistance.
We’re talking about stories passed from grandmother’s lap to classroom shelves to the beat-up backpack on a bus seat.

For some of us, it was Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.
For others, it was The Coldest Winter Ever.
Maybe it was Beloved. Maybe it was The Giving Tree. Maybe it was the margins of your own journal, when nothing else made sense but the rhythm of your own words.

Books remember us, even when the world tries to forget us.

This World Book Day, let’s commit to the following:

  • Buy a book by a living, independent author. Bonus points if they’re from your community.
  • Revisit a childhood favorite and see what new meaning it holds.
  • Read with someone — a child, a friend, a neighbor. Reading together heals.
  • Start the book you’ve been meaning to write. Your voice deserves to live in ink.

To every storyteller, every reluctant reader turned bookworm, every poet scribbling on napkins, every teacher who slid a book into your hands like a secret — thank you.

We read to know we’re not alone.
We write to remind others the same.

Happy World Book Day. Keep turning pages — yours and ours.
