REVIEW: Spider-Man: NWH – Trailer

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.

Are we going to lose some fan favorites in this movie? Will MJ die? Will Ned die? Will Aunt May die? Will Spidey die — and if so, which one — if any? Is Doc Oc a hero this time? Will this image come to pass —

Spoiling nothing — the masses cannot wait for this film to be released. So many theories, so many questions, so little time. With 30 days between us and opening night, what are you most excited to see happen in this movie?

Comment below.

Let it be known that this new phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is welcoming some distinct changes in order to pivot the entire franchise in a new direction. This means new heroes, heartbreaking deaths, and irreversible universal damage.

The conspiracy theorists are abuzz as always with Marvel films. As we know from The Avengers movies, the trailers will have things edited out so the surprise won’t be ruined for moviegoers around the world. Is this trailer the same? Are Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, James Franco, Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone, etc. in this movie? We see from the trailer that Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, Willem Dafoe, JK Simmons, and more all make appearances in the trailer.

Also — as we learned from the teaser trailer, something goes terribly wrong and Spiderman feels he has to remove his memory from people’s minds using Doctor Strange’s power. Peter messes up the spell somehow and all hell breaks loose.

There are many theories about the lineup of the shots (in both the teaser and official trailer) and in fact, those whom we’re told aren’t in the film are just cleverly disguised. Here are a few of my favorite theories so far —

Theory — “after Doc Ock knows that the Peter he was fighting in the trailer was not his Spider-Man, he decided to help them defeat the rest of the villains and he just wanted to go back to his universe.”

Theory — “the hand reaching for MJ at the end is Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man after Tom’s Spider-Man becomes unable to save her. Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man gets redemption for not being able to save Gwen Stacy in his universe!

Theory — “I get the feeling that this is actually a cut between 2 completely different scenes, and that Tom is actually asking this question to either Tobey or Andrew, where they respond with “I’m Peter Parker”, hence Peter and his friends laughing in disbelief.

Theory — “when Dr. Strange says “they’re starting to come through and I can’t stop them,” I think it’s Tobey and Andrew coming through, because if you see Peter is already injured badly. So it wouldn’t be the villains coming through and there are only two strands of the multiverse showing.

Theory — “The botched spell is going to bring the X-Men into the MCU. Near the end of the trailer, when Doctor Strange is saying “they’re starting to come through and I can‘t stop them,” mutants are crossing over into the Universe. The fact that the scene is happening at the Statue of Liberty is an homage to the first X-Men movie, which had its finale take place at the Statue of Liberty.”

Theory — “…who hit the lizard in the trailer? (see below) Another edited-out figure perhaps?

The Brazilian version of the trailer

Theory — “I bet Electro, Lizard, and Sandman won’t show up until the final fight scene when Dr. Strange says “I can’t hold them back any longer”. This is also when Toby and Andrew show up. Doc Ock and Green Goblin show up earlier in the movie and Doc Ock becomes an anti-villain by the final fight scene. That’s why it shows Electro fighting Doc Ock.”

Theory “They still seem to be hinting Tobey and Andrew with the “you’re not Peter” and the saving MJ scene. We’ll see, but I think Loki events created branch realities that allowed for this to happen. So may not necessarily be Peter’s fault. It may be happening simultaneously with the end of Loki.”

Okay, enough theories (for now) — so many possibilities that will forever change the future of the MCU. Will we get the Sinister Six lineup from this film? Doc Ock acknowledges that the MCU Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is not the Peter Parker from his universe; will he be a hero once again?

Is the MJ romance a foreshadowing of her death or completely forgetting about Peter completely? This would devastate Peter. Who is the other goblin-like figure appearing in front of the moon in the trailer — Hobgoblin? Will Ned be revealed as a new villain after some turmoil with Peter’s choice to save MJ over him in a pivotal moment?

So much to unpack — but let’s cover some of my favorite lines from the official teaser and trailer:

Doc Oc — “Hello, Peter.”

Doc Oc“You’re not Peter Parker.”

Doc Oc“You’re flying out into the darkness to fight ghosts.”

Doctor Strange“They’re starting to come through, I can’t stop them.”

Doctor Strange“There are others out there.”

Doctor Strange“They all died fighting Spiderman.”

Electro “You’re not going to take this away from me.”

Green Goblin“You’re struggling to have everything you want while the world tries to make you choose.”

Spider-Man (Tom Holland)“I can’t save everyone.”

I plan to get a few tickets to either give away or have folks compete for with an upcoming episode of AT THE MOVIES possibly planned to discuss in detail the film and its place in this new phase of the MCU.

Whatever your view — this film expands on the possibilities of storytelling and what the cinema can do moving forward. Though COVID-19 delayed our viewing pleasure it strengthened storytelling and the promise of a spectacular experience. Marvel never disappoints so I cannot wait to see how well this story is told and weaved together.

…see you AT THE MOVIES.
